Which part of your body defines your self-worth?

May 24, 2023

Which part of your body defines your self-worth? Your abs, your thighs, your belly perhaps? Yes – we know it’s an odd question, so why do we dissect ourselves in the mirror?

Why do we hyper focus on parts of our body, elevate their importance and cease to see them as part of the bigger picture?

Put it this way, think about a good friend or your partner – which part of them is the bit that made you like them? You’re probably thinking that makes little sense because you love all of them. Perhaps what you love is how they treat you, their smile, generosity, or their hugs. Perhaps it’s the energy they bring into the room.

So, if that’s how we think about others, why do we think of ourselves as only as valuable as our most flawed body part rather than the total sum of our parts, our actions and the depth of our character?

In a nutshell – when you die, people will talk about your spirit, how you made them feel, what good things you did in the world, your kindness, laughter and perhaps your creativity. They probably won’t mention your abs, your thighs, or your waist measurement.

And sure, occasionally you might meet someone who dissects your body into parts, judging each aspect of your physical self. Just know, that reflects their own insecurity and self-loathing, it has nothing to do with you. It’s not about you.

Let’s be clear. There is nothing wrong with having physical or health goals but remember that they don’t define your worth. Their only importance is the added value they bring to your journey – be it, more energy, better health, or quality of life. See yourself as you see the ones you love.
