As we grow, we experience age-related loss of muscle mass and strength, this is called sarcopenia. The loss can be accelerated by modern sedentary lifestyles. The outcome can rob us of quality of life in our later years. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t minimise the decline, in some cases you can even reverse it and this is where strength training is key.
As modern medicine is extending our average lifespan, the prospect of a living a long life with sarcopenia is daunting. In this case its ‘use it or lose it’ – that’s the good news, we can choose to do something about it. Choosing not to make positive lifestyle changes that retain your muscle mass and strength, can mean living with brittle and broken bones, mobility issues, falls and a vast array of often preventable diseases that affect our independence and quality of life.
As there are so many benefits to strength training as we age, we decided to ask some of our 50+ clients how it has helped them, and this is what they told us:
Gary
Even though I’m now 70, if I trip, I find I can catch myself because my reactions are still quick. I’d probably be on the floor with a broken hip if I wasn’t strength training.
Lesley
Strength training has helped me feel strong in body and mind. It helps with stress, balance, bone strength and picking up heavy objects.

I’m in my 70’s and can still easily get up and down off the floor with my grandchildren, carry all my bags of shopping without struggling and I’m just physically and mentally fitter.
Rosie
Being able to maintain strength and mobility so I don’t really notice the side effects of getting older, in fact in many ways the opposite, achieving things now that my younger self could not do.
Kaye
If it wasn’t for strength training, I would struggle with the physical and mental demands of my profession.
Steve
I no longer suffer major joint pain, I can enjoy outdoor activities while others my age scale back and if flows into good mental health.
